Bridges of Bihar: Kosi Mahasetu

Since 2008, People in the Kosi belt fear devastation by floods. At that time the whole communication network was totally wiped out. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar then promised to ensure development of the entire region. A promise that took him four years to fulfil in the form of Baluaha Ghat bridge or ‘Kosi Mahasetu’.

This two kilometre bridge over the Kosi in Saharsa district put development back on track. Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited finished this two kilometre bridge made of RCC in less than four years. “The bridge was inaugurated one month ahead of the schedule. It is of high-level reinforcement concrete cement (RCC) and goes over the Kosi between Baluaha Ghat and Gandaul ,” says BRPNNL chairman Sridhar C.

This bridge has significantly reduced the travel time, once again putting the rural economy on track. Most importantly, the bridge has reduced distances between Darbhanga, Samastipur, Madhubani and Muzaffarpur and other parts of the Kosi region by 100 to 150 km.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar says, “The mega road bridge built over Kosi region will reunite the cultural link between Kosi and Mithilanchal.”

Built at a cost of Rs 531.15 crore, the total area of land acquired for the project was about 125 acres. The bridge has 41 piers with a span length of 50 metres.
