Village kids make music at Ravi Bharati

For the past two decades, Ravi Bharati the archdiocesan communication centre has been welcoming kids to a ‘summer camp’ of music. On Saturday, the eve of World Music Day, some 42 kids put on a concert for their parents, on the concluding day of their month long camp.

The children, aged 10 to 13 showcased their instrumental and vocal skills on a two hour show.

“Every year, children from the rural parishes across Bihar are sent here. The parish priests send a couple of boys and girls who have a ear for music. The children receive basic lessons in the table, harmonium and classical and folk music. The idea is to start them off on a musical discovery. They go back and form part of the church choirs. Some continue to practice and learn,” Ravi Bharati Director Arun Ignatius SJ explained.

The children performed rhythm exercises on the table, vocalized devotional songs based on rudimentary ragas, and demonstrated their range by attempting folk songs, kirtans, and a sufi qawalli. They also performed a couple of dances, including a Dandiya.

“I’m sure you got a taste of how to make sweet music, and that the flavour will remain with you always,” Bishop Sebastian told the kids. “You will go back to your homes and then provide valuable support to the church choirs through your singing and playing. I am sure your parents will help nurture your God given talent.”
