Stop the Siang river dams, Arunachal tribes ask Centre

ITANAGAR, Arunachal Pradesh – The centre appears to be gung ho about imposing huge hydel projects on the hilly regions, and exploiting the people of Arunachal Pradesh to the fullest. If the UPA government tried to do this slowly, quietly marking fertile lands and villages to drown, the NDA or rather BJP government has no compunctions about forcing the tribals to ‘sacrifice’ in the ‘national interest’. Appeals to reason appear to fall on deaf ears.

Opposing mega dams on Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh, an NGO has once again appealed to Centre not to give environmental clearance for mega dams in Siang belt comprising four districts of Siang, East Siang, Upper Siang and West Siang.

Siang People’s Forum (SPF) in a memorandum to Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar made it clear the people of the four districts would not compromise on its demand of scrapping all mega dams over the Siang river.

The Forum while informing that the issue of mega dam over Siang was pending with Gauhati High Court after a PIL was filed this year, urged the Minister not to give clearance to the projects recklessly against the wish of the indigenous people.
