No crime to report at this police station

At this span of time when a large number of rape cases are filed in our country there is a special police station at a very special place where not even a single case of rape has been filed since 23 years. This police station is situated 15 km away from the Indo-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer district. The place is called Shahgarh Buji and was established in the year 1993.

In the last 23 years, only 55 cases have been lodged in this police station. Apparently, no person has been kep in the lock-up.

Situated 150 km from Jaisalmer at the international border, and spread over 9,600 sq km area, the place has become ‘exemplary’ where there is no crime and people live in harmony.

The police station is the only building in Shahgarh Bulj which does not have electricity and water. There is intense darkness at night and there is no village nearby. The area has a population of 900 people who reside in faraway houses.

The police station building has barracks for male and female prisoners, but till date no prisoner has been kept in the barrack. There is an old jeep to chase criminals, which is in running condition.

Another interesting thing about this police station is that if any notorious police official has to be given punishment, he is sent here because there are no means of transportation and no light and water. Although there are 15 officials in the police station including the inspector. But at present there are six personnel including an assistant sub-inspector.

SP Rajiv Pachar said “earlier border crimes like smuggling of narcotics and weapons were rampant in this area as there was no fencing. But after installing the fencing, such activities have stopped.”

“This police station was set up in 1993 and only 55 cases have been lodged so far. In 2006, one case under Section 302 was lodged and in 1994 one case under Section 307 was lodged. Till date no case of rape has been lodged in this police station,” he said.

Counting the number of cases registered at the station over the last 10 years, the SP said that in 2005 there was no case, one case in 2006, two cases in 2007, one case in 2008, no case in 2009 and 2010, one in 2011, four cases in 2012, two in 2013 and 2014 and three cases were filed in 2015. In 2016 so far, no case has been filed.
