Crime has increased manifold in recent years; yet in West Bengal, there seems to no inclination among students to study the nature of crime and ways to deal with it. It can be rightly pointed out  that an analysis of the psychology of the criminal is the key to understanding the nature of the crime committed. Criminology also focuses on the psychology of the victim.

Needless to say, that there is an urgent need to introduce criminology as a subject in colleges and universities. The media can play an important role in spreading awareness about this course and eliciting interest in this subject among the youth. They can also urge the state government to introduce criminology as a degree course. The  proposal to set up a police university in West Bengal is a brilliant one.
