National Science Day focus on ‘Specially Abled’

How does Science and Technology benefit the Physically challenged and Specially Abled people? This is the theme for the 2017 National Science Day.

National  Science Day is celebrated on the 28th February  every year to commemorate the Indian physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman and his discovery of what is called  ‘the Raman Scattering’ (inelastic scattering of a photon by molecules which are excited to higher vibrational or rotational energy levels)  on the same day in the year 1928.

Sir C V Raman was awarded and honoured with the Nobel Prize in the Physics in the year 1930.

National Science Day is  one of the main annual ‘science festivals’ in India.

The theme of the year 2017 is “Science and Technology for specially abled persons”. Its aim is to widely spread a message about the significance of scientific applications in the daily life of the people, to display the all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare, to discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development of the science, to give an opportunity to the scientific minded citizens in the country and to encourage the people as well as popularize Science and Technology.

During this festival students of the schools and colleges demonstrate various science projects as well as national and state science institutions demonstrate their latest research. The celebration also includes public speeches, radio-TV talk shows, exhibitions of science movie, science exhibition based on themes and concepts, watching night sky, live projects and researches demonstration, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science models exhibitions and many more activities.

It is celebrated every year with immense passion at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (also called GMRT) at Khodad which is a worldwide famous telescope  operated at low radio frequencies by the NCRA (National Centre for Radio Astrophysics) established by the TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research).

A variety of activities is organized by the NCRA and GMRT on national science day  to recognize leading research activities in the field of radio astronomy and astrophysics.

Many different programmes are held for the common public and student community to popularize the science and technology in the country.

The minister of science and technology usually gives give a message on  this day to the students, scientists, researchers and general public of the nation.
