Shout out for Radio

Sir,

13th February is celebrated as ‘World Radio Day’ by people all over the globe. Started in the year 2012 World Radio Day is in its sixth year. It is recognized as an International Day by the United Nations (UN).

Despite being a 100 year old medium, radio continues to be one of the most popular ways to exchange information, educate and entertain people all over the world.

Radio is a medium for all, it does not discriminate between rich and poor, literate or illiterate. It is a very powerful medium because it has the ability to reach huge mass of audience quickly and has a deeper penetration than other forms of media. It is even more intimate and personal.

One of the greatest advantage radio has over other medium is that is can be played in the background. One can listen to radio while he is driving car or while doing household chores. Also radio is very portable and can be carried anywhere, nowadays every mobile phone has radio preinstalled in it. Also it  very cheap so anyone could afford it. All these factors accounts for radio being one of the best medium and that it hasn’t lost its relevance even after a century.

One of the significant feature radio has is that it requires no electricity. The information can flow relentlessly without any hindrance.

Radio continues to thrive consistently as new stations are being set every now and then across cities in India. At present there are 245 radio channels active in the country catering to the needs of varied demographic audience.

For a majority of the rural population, radio is the only source of respite in the evening after a tiring and exhausting day. It helps them to get the news and their dose of entertainment. Thus it holds an important place in their lives.

The urban population and the elite are no exception. They love radio much as anyone else. What is  than listening to your favourite number on the radio? Radio is the only rescue for someone stuck in  bad traffic. Forgot your music CD? You can always play the radio while on a drive. You don’t realize but you are always carrying the radio with you in your cell phone and can access it anytime, anywhere.

Radio has continuously evolved and transformed itself according to the times. It has acquired a special place in our hearts and has become an integral part of our lives. It has and always will continue to be the favourite medium of the people.

Radio is the medium of the millennium.

Yours Truly
