Kaziranga Park becomes Rhino killing field?

Tezpur : Poachers reportedly  broke into Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, killed an adult rhinoceros and sawed off its horn, It’s the third such incidents in the protected zone this week, says a PTI report.

The carcass of the male rhino was found today (November 9) near Bokpara camp under Kohora range of the park where it was killed last night, KNP Divisional Forest Officer Rohini Ballav Saikia said.

A  cache of arms and ammunition allegedly beonging to poachers was also recovered from the park, he said.

Search operations were launched to nab the poachers who fled with the horn, Saikia said.

Just last week, four rhinos were killed by poachers for their horns in the park. An adult female ‘Pride of Assam’ was shot dead near Tunekati Forest Camp under Burapahar Range of the UNESCO declared World Heritage Site followed by the gunning down of a rhino and her female calf on Saturday night at the same spot.

Poachers killed two rhinos  in their habitat in the park earlier in February at Hatibali Chapori in the KNP Sixth Addition area and Burapahar Range in April, while 18 rhinos were killed by poachers in Park with their horn taken away last year.

Meanwhile, during routine duty last night traffic police from neighbouring Nagaon district’s Haibargaon Point stopped a vehicle coming from Guwahati on National Highway 37, police said.

The driver and three persons in the vehicle fled the spot leaving behind their car with an AK-47 rifle, a 303 rifle, live ammunition, three magazines, a good number of sharp weapons, some brown sugar and three torch lights, police said.

Jakhalabandha police station officer-in-charge Deben Borah said a number of groups have tried to enter into the national park area and police are investigating the matter.

    It is such a shame witnessing these news. The parks of 21st century is also not safer these days. People for their profit has gone so ruthless that are hunting inside the parks. Arti-crafts has became more important these days than real animals roaming in the wilds.

    As humans do these animals not have the right to live Just to satisfy own greed killing innocent animals. Is this is humanity?

    Campaigns are done and national parks are made to save animals ,and then they are being killed mercilessly even in these parks made for their safety. Where is the humanity? Where is their security?

    Such a horrific action. What is the gain in killing innocent animals? I wonder what would be the reaction of those killers if done the same to them. Cut their most important part of the body and leave me them to die in pain.

    And here again, we mourn the poor dumb animals. But in this vast country with so many pressing problems, how many of us can really devote time to save these endangered creatures, when we have our very survival, privacy, and complicated taxes to worry about?
