Police Witch hunting Jharkhand Govt Officers?

Ranchi: Over 800 officials of Jharkhand administrative services, who had gone on a mass leave alleging police witch-hunt against them in the name of combating corruption, will return to work on Saturday after the state government agreed to their demands and announced probe teams to look into the arrest and manhandling of a Hazaribagh circle officer.

According to an official notification issued by the state personnel department, a three-member team of the cabinet coordination and vigilance department would look into the actions of anti-corruption bureau (ACB) sleuths who had arrested and allegedly beaten up Barkatha circle officer Manoj Kumar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.

The team, comprising social welfare secretary Himani Pande, labour secretary Amitabh Kaushal and ADG of state police (headquarters) P.R.K. Naidu, has been asked to submit a report in three days.

Hazaribagh deputy commissioner Ravi Shankar Shukla and SP Anup Birtharay have been directed to conduct a separate inquiry into the allegations that Barkatha police station OC refused to register an FIR which Kumar’s family members wanted to file.

On Friday, the OC was removed from his post and asked to report at police lines till the probe was over.

Henceforth, the ACB was also asked to include a magistrate in teams conducting anti-corruption raids as per the demands of Jharkhand Prashasanik Seva Sangh, a delegation of which met chief secretary Rajbala Verma and personnel secretary Nidhi Khare on Thursday evening.

Sangh chief Danial Kandulna said they would go back to work from Saturday. “Now that all our key demands have been formally met, we will wait for the probe reports, but return to work from tomorrow (Saturday),” he said.

Earlier this week, ACB sleuths nabbed circle officer Kumar with money. But, the sangh has claimed the raid was a “fake trap”.

Sangh member and sports department director Ranendra Kumar claimed Kumar was in fact having lunch at home when a man barged in, threw cash and ran off.

“But, ACB sleuths caught him without hearing his version,” he said.
