A Tamasha at City Mall, Patna

A Tamasha at City Mall, Patna

June, Patna: Visitors to Patna’s Central Mall were arrested by the sight of a girl being almost strangled by two guys. They stood riveted by this brilliant street play written by Nihal Kumar, a second year Mass Communication student.

Tamasha-journey of women was organized by Xavier’s Theatre club of St. Xavier’s College of Mgmt. & Tech., at Patna Central Mall, Frazer Road at 6:30 on Saturday evening. The theme of the play was women’s empowerment. The street play was written by Nihal Kumar Dutta and directed by Shivanshu Singh Satya and Nihal, students of St. Xavier’s College of Mgmt. & Tech, as part of a Theatre Club Activity.

The 10-minute play showed the journey of a woman from her birth, the problems she faces in her daily life. The main focus of the play was social issues such as female infanticide, discrimination between girls and boys on basis of education and life facilities, dowry system, molestation, acid attacks and rape.

Says the author and co-director, “The Mass Communication Department at St Xavier’s college gives us a tremendous opportunity to home our skills in writing and dramatics. Our college principal, our teachers, and elders are very sensitive to gender-related issues. They always encourage us to express our ideas to make our society a better place.”

The mentor of the Xavier Theatre Club, Ajay Kumar said “our main idea behind the play was to create awareness. To make people think about the issues that are witnessing on daily basis but are with closed eyes. It is a try to break the boundary that the society has created for girls to live in”. The tone of the play was serious as well as sarcastic.

“The theme of the play was very good because issues like such have to be discussed as not only people who are illiterate but also who are well educated, know the laws and everything are very ignorant towards such issues,” said Mrs Deepika Kumar, a member of the audience of the play. Mr Bipin Kumar Singh, another viewer said: “the performance was very good and plays like such act as a reminder of the duties of the individuals towards the formation of a safe society for women”.

The performers did justice to their characters and urge people to think and to take action to change the scenario. The performance ended with the girls’ performer reciting verses “tu ladkihai” and with an appeal to be part of the change for women empowerment.

Being a part of this street play, we tried to show the reality of our society and make people spellbound. We forced them to think what de actually doing. Watching a ‘Tamasha’ made them realise that if they won’t take serious steps, one day they will become a ‘Tamasha’
