For Queen Elizabeth II, India Declares State Mourning On Sunday

A day of state mourning will be observed in India on September 11 “as a mark of respect” for the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced today. She died yesterday at the age of 96.
“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passed away on 8th September 2022. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day State Mourning on September 11th throughout India,” the press release read.

The demise of the longest serving monarch of the UK, has been a sad day for one of the largest countries in the British Commonwealth. Tributes and condolences poured in from the political fraternity, in India on the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

President Droupadi Murmu offered condolences in a tweet, saying “In the demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of UK, the world has lost a great personality. An era has passed since she steered her country and people for over 7 decades. I share the grief of people of UK and convey my heartfelt condolence to the family,” the President tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, : “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a stalwart of our times. She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour.”

In another tweet he recalled meeting the Queen in 2015 and 2018 he said “I had memorable meetings with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during my UK visits in 2015 and 2018. I will never forget her warmth and kindness. During one of the meetings she showed me the handkerchief Mahatma Gandhi gifted her on her wedding. I will always cherish that gesture.”

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted “My condolences to the people of UK and the Royal Family on the passing away of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She had a long and glorious reign, serving her country with utmost commitment and dignity,”

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said “In the passing away of Queen Elizabeth II, the world has lost an exemplary leader. Her life signified the tenets of service and duty. It is the end of an era. I extend my condolences to her family and the people of UK.”

Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia, expressing his condolences, tweeted: “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s life embodied courage, wisdom & service. She will forever be remembered for her leadership, as the longest-serving monarch of the United Kingdom. Our thoughts & prayers are with all her citizens at this time of grief. May her soul rest in peace.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also offered condolences on the Queen’s passing away. “Deeply pained by the demise of HM Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. After a reign spanning seven decades, 15 Prime Ministers and several major turning points in modern history, the second Elizabethan era has come to an end,” Stalin tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared a tweet expressing her condolences “I express my condolences to the British Royal family and the people of the United Kingdom on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. An era comes to an end as the longest reigning British monarch leaves for her heavenly abode.”
