World Radio Day

World Radio Day

Whether we are there in irritating traffic jams or beautiful long drive, tired after long working hours or when the power is cut and our idiot box is silent our friend radio is there for rescue. It keeps us informed and entertained and also helps by keeping us updated in difficult times such as floods, earthquakes or in any other natural calamities.

To celebrate the power of radio and mark its importance in shaping our lives 13th February is commorated as World Radio Day. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. More specifically, earlier radio was an only medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities, like during the India’s war for independence radio played a significant role in disseminating information and motivating people to unite and fight for independence.

The students of Mass Communication of St Xavier’s College of Management & Technology, Digha, Patna organized a program to celebrate the World Radio Day in the presence of Principal Rev. Fr. T.Nishaant SJ, the head of the department Ms. Neerja Lal, Professors Fr. Sebastian SJ and Ruchin Chainpuri. It started with the introduction and evolution of Radio and how it eventually became a part of our life. Followed by this a quiz was held between all the three batches of BMC. It had three rounds in which questions were based on radio jockeys and old songs. BMC 2nd year won the quiz. There was a standup comedy by Aman Kumar of BMC 1st and mimicry by Nihal Kumar Dutta , Rajan Kumar of BMC 3rd  Krishna Ravi of BMC 2nd and Ayan Rehman and Akshay Kumar of BMC 1st. The program ended by melody of 90’s song by Daniel Ghansi of BMC 1st.

In year 2010, the idea of World Radio Day was first proposed by Spain’s Radio Academy. The following year, in 2011, UNESCO declared the first World Radio Day. February 13 was chosen to mark World Radio Day, coinciding with the anniversary of the United Nations Radio, the United Nation’s international broadcasting service which was established on February 13, 1946.

The World Radio Day was first celebrated 8 years before in year 2012, following its declaration by the UNESCO General Conference. In year 2019 the theme for World Radio Day is “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”.
