Shillong: Good news for boxing fans as six Indian Boxers: M. C. Mary Kom, L Devendro Singh, Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar, Vikas Krishan, Pooja Rani advanced to the finals of the 12th South Asian Games on Sunday.
The woman boxing star of the North east, Olympic bronze-medallist Mary Kom, in 51kg weight category, defeated her Bangladeshi opponent Shamina Akter.
Former South Asian Games gold-medallist Anusha Kodituwakku Dilrukshi of Sri Lanka will challenge Mary Kom for the gold medal on Tuesday.
In the men’s competition, Glasgow Commonwealth silver-medallist L Devendro Singh (49kg) defeated Thiwana Ranasinghe.
Another North-eastern star, World championship bronze-medallist Shiva Thapa (56kg) despite the height disadvantage got the better of his Bangladeshi opponent Mohammad Ohiduzzaman. Thapa will take on W Ruwan Thilina of Sri Lanka in the final.
Vikas Krishan, 2011 World Champion, emerged victorious against his Afghani opponent Folad S Wali in 75kg weight category.
Olympian and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, Manoj Kumar (64kg) won his bout against Tshering Wangchuk of Bhutan.
