SYDNEY, Australia: They hid it inside gel bras, but got busted! Based on a tip-off by the Chinese Narcotic Control Commission, the Australian customs and the country’s Federal Police have busted a huge drug racket, making it one of their biggest hauls ever.
Australian customs and police seized 720 litres of methylamphetamine, commonly known as ‘Ice’ in the region ,hidden in a shipment of silicon bra inserts and art supplies. The seized drugs are said to be worth US$ 700 million.
Authorities pointed out that this was the biggest bust in Australia’s history, and the largest seizure of liquid methylamphetamine ever.
In an official statement, Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan said, “This largest seizure of liquid methylamphetamine to date is the result of organized criminals targeting the lucrative Australian ice market from offshore. This operation has resulted in 3.6 million individual hits of ice being taken off our streets. Whilst Australians continue to have such an appetite for this mind destroying drug, organized criminal gangs will continue to target the Australian market.”
The Australian Federal Police said that four people were charged and that a total of 720 litres of the drug was seized. Australian Federal Police Commander Chris Sheehan also added that the liquid could have made about 500 kg of high-grade crystal meth.
The shipment of stick on gel bras was traced back to a storage facility in Hong Kong and authorities have arrested one Chinese national and two Hong Kong nationals for importing and manufacturing the drug.
