It’s time to put the capital of Bihar on the ‘metro’ map of India. In about 6 years, if things go well, Patna residents will be travelling from Danapur towards Mithapur bus stand via Patna junction in about 20 minutes! A proposal to introduce rapid transport system in Patna is being sent to the central government.
The Metro in Patna is expected to bring a lot of benefits. People will opt for the faster Metro rail, and this will reduce private vehicles which will in turn reduce traffic jams at peak hours. The rapid transport system will reduce travelling time, and during peak hours it help people to reach their destination quickly and smoothly.
The proposal, submitted to the urban development Ministry envisions a phase-wise construction.
The first one will be the East West corridor which includes routes from Danapur to Mithapur via Patna Junction. The second one will be North- South corridor from Patna Junction to new ISBT via Gandhi maidan, PMCH and Rajendra Nagar station.
The total length of east west corridor will be 16.9 km in which the length for the elevated portion is 11.3 km. There will be 14 stations in this corridor in which 5 stations will be elevated and 9 stations will be underground.
In the north- south corridor the length of the track will be 14.02 km in which the length of the elevated portion will be 9.625 km. There will be around 12 stations in this line in which 9 will be elevated ones and 3 will be underground stations.
According to M/s Rites, the company responsible for the project report, the financial plan has been prepared. This metro-rail project will cost approximately Rs 16,960 crore (round it off to 17,000 crore). The burden is 6,544 crores from the Bihar government, 2,604 crores from central government and 7812 crores from JICA/ADB. The construction is expected to be completed five years from the start of the project.
A special purpose vehicle corporation will be created for the construction and the management of the Patna Metro.
