Sir,
Maiti Aandolan which was started in Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal) in Chamauli district, in 1994 has spread all over the world. This campaign is practiced like a festival in more than eight thousand villages in Uttaranchal.
Thousands of saplings that were planted in past have now become trees. Kalyaansingh Raavat who founded this aandolan was a teacher but now he has retired.
In Uttaranchal the meaning of mait is the girl’s house. Every girl wants her birth place to flourish and prosper in every aspect. Because of this emotional attachment, every girl of this village is actively participating in this green campaign.
To give this ‘aandolan’ a versatile dimension, every village forms a maiti organisation which unmarried girls joins. And also to make this organisation creative, the girls choose their own leader, and this leader is called as ‘badi didi’.
When the ‘Badi didi’ gets married another qualified girl is selected for the position of Badi didi. Thus this chain continues .
In this climate-friendly aandolan, these girls nourish the saplings and take care of their conservation. People have started giving out invitation cards for maiti programmes.
This is a big social change.
Yours Truly,

This small district of Uttarakhand has made a great step towards protecting our environment. The campaign should be appreciated and highlighted so that other states can follow this ‘aandolan’ too as it is beneficial for the environment.
