THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is in shock! In a gruesome incident, a 65-year-old woman was attacked and partly eaten up by a pack of 50 ferocious stray dogs on Friday night barely 10 km from the state secretariat.
The unfortunate woman, Sheeluamma, died in the Medical College hospital here. Angry relatives and residents of the area have blamed the city authority for her death.
“We have lost all our patience as the authorities are hanging on to some obscure law which says dogs cannot be eliminated. Are we inferior to these dogs,” asked a group of angry residents in Pulluvilla.
The incident took place around 9 p.m. in the coastal village Pulluvilla about 30 minutes from the state capital when Sheeluamma went to the seafront to use a toilet there. Her son witnessed her being torn up by the hungry canines when he came searching for her. He had to dive into the sea to save himself from the dogs.
An hour later after Sheeluamma’s death, another Pulluvila resident Daisy, aged 52, has been admitted to the Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram after being attacked by stray dogs and suffering injuries on hands and legs .
According to the locals, the region has been facing stray dog menace for a very long time and no action has been taken by the authorities.
The city corporation has a stray dog population of 9250 dogs in ten major city wards, as per the latest survey report prepared by the health wing of civic body and released in January this year.
Instead of dithering, the local authorities should immediately swing into action, to eliminate these man-eating dogs. It must be mentioned that only recently the city of Lahore poisoned hundreds of stray dogs.
What does dog lover Meneka Gandhi have to say about this? I’m sure you won’t get a peep out of her. She’ll probably blame the old lady for exciting the dogs!
