AGARTALA: Gymnast Dipa Karmakar, fresh from the Rio Olympics received a rousing welcome as she touched down on her home state. The state government declared a one day holiday for educational institutions in honour of Deepa, who actually didn’t win a bronze but took fourth place.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar announced that Dipa Karmakar would be promoted to assistant director, Sports and her coach Bisweshwar Nandi to deputy director of the Sports Department. Dipa is currently a sports officer and her coach is an assistant director of Sports Department.
Sarkar made the announcement during a felicitation programme held at Swami Vivekananda Stadium after her arrival on Monday.
Dipa Karmakar and her coach received a warm reception after she reached at Agartala Airport today morning. They later travelled to the stadium on an open jeep followed by a procession of over 100 motorbikes and other vehicles.
Sarkar said that she has already scripted history by becoming India’s first woman gymnast in Olympics. Though she could not win a medal, she has won many hearts. She also urged Dipa and her coach to continue practice to score better in the coming tournaments.
Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty declared holiday in educational institutions tomorrow in their honour.Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shahid Choudhury, Forest Minister Naresh Jamatia, MP – Shankar Prasad Datta and others were present in the programme.
Dipa scripted is the first Indian to participate in the finals of World Gymnastics Championship scoring total 14.900 points in the women’s Vault qualification in the World Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow on 25 October, 2015.
She was also the first Indian woman Gymnast to have bagged a bronze medal in Common Wealth Games in 2014.
