There are several government schools in Patna, Bihar’s capital but, several state run schools are in a sorry state. The schools may serve the ‘letter’ of the Right to Education Act, but fail in its spirit. The children need the basic facilities for their growth and development.

For example, the Boys Middle School in Karbigahiya is in its worst condition. It runs in a ramshackle building, with falling plaster from the ceiling, still 250 students come daily to this school.

Guess what! Three schools run in the building of Boys Middle School in Karbigahiya.  The ‘Jhuggi- Jhopri Talab School’ and  the ‘New Modern Sinha Middle School’ operate  in the morning shift,  while the Boys’ Middle School in works the afternoon shift.

In this two storey building, there are eight rooms. The top three rooms are damaged, even so,  in the morning the students of New Modern Sinha School use one of them. Since the top rooms are damaged the ground floor rooms have the problem of water seepage. The stairs  for the top floor are also severely damaged. There is a big hole in the stairway.

Likewise Gajadhar Middle School in Chiraiyatand is also in the same condition.

Bunty, a student of Boys Middle School told a local Hindi newspaper, “Most of the times students get stuck in this hole. May be it will be repaired after the accident happens“.

Ram Patel Roy the headmaster of Boys Middle School said “We had submitted the application detailing the ruined infrastructure and officials had also come but the actions have not been taken to improve it”.

Not only this, but the water has  stagnated in front of the building for a long period of time and the condition becomes worse after the rain.  Shrubs have come all around the place increasing the mosquitoes. Students are unable to concentrate on their work because of these mosquitoes. It does not let them stay comfortable for even two minutes, according to the report.
