The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science in Patna may start post graduation course in orthopaedics, ENT and general medicine, its medical superintendent Manish Mandal said on Wednesday.  

After the Medical Council of India (MCI) inspection of the available infrastructure and faculty strength of the three departments which had applied for PG seats, Mandal said the IGMS is expecting around 25 PG seats in the three clinical courses. The MCI teams inspected ENT department on January 21, general medicine department on January 18 and orthopaedics on January 14 as per local news.

As of now, the IGMS provides PG courses only in non-clinical subjects, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, forensic medicine and pharmacology. “We are expecting the MCI report to come in a month. If we are allotted the seats, admission will begin for those who qualify the next Nationality Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET),” said Mandal.

Explaining the procedure of seats allotment, he said apart from infrastructure and instruments, availability of teachers is also important. Three seats are allotted on one professor and two on one associate professor. As of now, general medicine department has one professor and two associate professors and it can get total nine seats. ENT department has one professor and two associate professors and may get seven seats. Similarly, orthopaedics department with one professor and three associate professors is eligible for nine seats. In total, the IGIMS may be allotted at least 25 seats for PG courses in three different clinical courses.

The IGIMS has also applied for PG courses in surgery, community medicine, and neurosurgery and paediatrics surgery.
