One more change for the students who failed in one subject. For the first time since its establishment in 1958, the Council for the School Certificate Examination, which conducts the ICSE (class 10) and ISC (class 12) exams, has allowed the students to appear for a compartmental examination for one subject without repeating the academic year.

The decision was made in order to allow students failing in one subject to be able to reappear in the exam the same year, without having to repeat the entire academic year.

Chief executive and secretary of the council, Gerry Arathoon at the time of announcing the results for ICSE and ISC exams said “We wanted to give the students a chance to retake the exam and that is why we have allowed them to appear for compartmental examination from this year”.

For both ICSE and ISC students, clearing English paper would be mandatory.

“The ICSE students would have to clear three more subjects in addition to English to be eligible for the compartment exam and the ISC students would have to clear two subjects. Only then can they appear for compartment exam,” added Arathoon.

The mark sheets would reflect ‘eligible for compartmental exam’ for students who can appear for it. The respective schools can then register the students online for the exam from June 24-30.

The exams will be conducted on July 15, 16 and 17 and the final results will be declared on August 5.

In another first, the students will get mark sheets giving details of the marks obtained in individual subjects and sections. For example, a class 10 student will get break up of marks in history, civics, geography for social science.

Similarly, English will have break up of marks for grammar and literature.

ICSE students will get their mark sheets and passing certificates by May 8 and ISC students by May 11.
