Blood Sacrifice: ‘Unit-ed’ for a cause!

Forty One  students donated blood while 45 more have been shortlisted for the same at a blood donation camp held at St. Xavier’s Colleges (Patna, Bihar) on Thursday. The Camp was organized under the aegis of Kurji Holy Family Hospital as part of college’s effort to contribute to the welfare of the society. Blood donation camp is held every year in the St. Xavier’s colleges and students come out willingly to donate blood. Even this year over 250 students gave their names for donation but only 41 out of 52 called could participate.

Students were excited to donate blood. Many of them were donating for the first time in their life. Some students were disappointed that they did not pass the mandatory weight and hemoglobin test.  After taking 41 units of blood, the medical team did a screening for other students who could be eligible for the next camp to be held after a month. The students will get a donor card valid for 6 months.

Lab technician Dr. Tabassum Praveen informed students, “The collected blood will be used for the patients who get injured in accidents and for pregnant ladies.”

“We really want to help the needy by donating blood because donating blood is the biggest sacrifice. My blood group AB (+) is rare so I really feel good about making my contribution,” said B.Com (P) Part II student Sarnavo Roy.

As students, we cannot go to help everywhere so this is a good way to donate blood in a fixed schedule on campus,’’ said BBA Part III student Alvin Samuel.

Sister Angela from Kurji Holy Family Hospital added, “Donating blood helps in reducing the risk of heart disease and lowers the risk of cancers including liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat cancer’’.

The camp was organized by the Social Awareness Committee of the college.
