The Struggle For Childhood

The Struggle For Childhood

Sir,
Why had the mother gone to the trouble of bringing the child into the world if the most exciting moment in her child’s life was having been made lame?
Children are the future citizens of our country. The future of the country depends on them. If the children do not develop in a proper way, the children’s future will be ruined.
This was rightly realized by our late Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. So he advised the people to stop observing his birthday on the 14th Nov and to observe this day as the Children’s Day.
Last week, I read in a newspaper that 43 children from a toy manufacturing unit in New Delhi when rescued and questioned what their dream was, one of them replied, “To be one day able to play with the toys they are making.”It is a shame to have kids work in these workplaces which are hazardous for their health. Factories aren’t for children. Children should be given pencils and not utensils.
How can we claim to be the largest democracy in the world when our children are deprived of their right to play and enjoy childhood?
Every eight minutes, a child goes missing and 8.5 lakh children die before their first birthdays. These figures only reflect the aspects of childhood protection. But they are strong enough to shake the moral and political conscience of our nation.
One in three rape victims is a child. If our faith leaders start condemning such acts and banish the perpetrators of these crime, would they not reduce?
A change in mindset is required. We need to create a generation of globally minded leaders, not followers. Voice and leadership of the children is required. We must act now.
Childhood is a part of human life in which they should enjoy the pleasures of life, parent’s love and pampering despite of being made to earn, make buildings and break stones at this very age.

“Children should be seen and heard. To have them working is absurd.”

It’s a good attempt and you have spent enough time to put your thoughts into words. I hope it is helpful for all of us who are reading through this particular article in some way or the other. I know we can help at least one person in our life time and it will make a difference so let’s try and not sit back in our own comfort zones.

    Good Article …
The curse of child labor is not only in India alone.
Poverty is not the only factor responsible for children being engaged as labor.Their parents don’t have employment opportunities.
Gov must come 4wrd to remove this curse with adequate financial help to the poor family. The Gov must arrange for free education .Child Labor Act must be properly maintained and followed.
And of course awareness in society is most important.

Really a good article on childhood. We should not forget that childhood is the best part of one’s life, as in that span we learn, play and grow. The respect and love given to children or the remembrance of them should not be limited to a single day (14th November) but for each and every moment.
