171 Mizoram Cops test Covid Positive after WB poll duty !

It’s not only the folks of Bengal who have has to suffer because of the election rallies during covid.  So far 171 policemen from Mizoram,  dispatched for  election duty to West Bengal have been diagnosed with COVIDid-19.

On May 5, local news sources revealed that  62  policemen, who recently returned from West Bengal after poll duty, were among the 238 people, who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Mizoram. Earlier last week, 109 policemen who had returned from West Bengal after election duty also tested COVID-19 positive. 

The policemen have been placed under quarantine, an official said on Wednesday.

Besides the policemen, two Assam Rifles personnel, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, two healthcare workers and 6 members from a family were among the newly infected people, he said.

According to local reports, at least 3,218 samples were tested of which 7.40 per cent came out as positive for COVID-19 to be the highest ever single-day spike in the state.

A total of 238 new COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in Mizoram.

Of the fresh cases, 146 cases were reported from Aizawl district, 42 from Serchhip district, 27 from Mamit district, 7 from Lawngtali district, 8 from Kolasib district and 4 cases each were reported from Lunglei and Saitual districts.

103 patients have developed symptoms of COVID -19, while the rest are asymptomatic, he added. Mizoram now has 1,609 active cases, while 5,168 people have recovered from the infection.

The death toll in the state is 17.

According to state immunization officer, 2,16,789 people including 54,924 senior citizens have been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine till Tuesday. Of this, 46,751 beneficiaries have received full dose of the vaccine, he said.
