In a shocking incident near Chennai, a transgender woman fell victim to a brutal assault after being mistaken for a child kidnapper by a gang of men. The incident occurred in Pammal, where the victim was allegedly stripped half-naked, tied to a pole, and mercilessly beaten by the assailants.
The victim, employed at an IT firm in Thoraipakkam, had ventured out after dinner at a local hotel in Mungileri on February 18. On her way home, she was accosted by two men who demanded her identity. Despite her attempts to clarify her profession, the attackers refused to believe her and launched a vicious attack.
Claiming they had received a forwarded message warning about a suspected child kidnapper in the area, the assailants targeted the victim based on her facial features, believing she matched the description. As the assault intensified, more men joined in, exacerbating the brutality of the attack. Shockingly, the entire ordeal was filmed and circulated on social media platforms.
Following the victim’s complaint, the Shankar Nagar police swiftly acted, registering a case under relevant sections of the Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rioting, wrongful restraint, abusive language, and voluntarily causing hurt.
Authorities moved quickly to apprehend the perpetrators, leading to the arrest of five men, including three aged between 20 and 30, and two others above 30, who were identified as contract employees at the Chennai airport. The accused are currently held at the Puzhal central prison, while the police continue their investigation, analyzing CCTV footage to determine if more individuals were involved in the heinous assault.
