India gets ready for 70th Independence day

Independence Day is of great significance for the people of India. On this day India got freedom from British rule. However it was not easy for India to get freedom but our various freedom fighters made this dream into a reality.

This year people are going to celebrate a grand Independence Day all over India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has planned a countrywide, fortnight-long celebration to mark 70 years of India’s Independence, between August 15 and 22, to pay the tribute and to remember all the freedom fighters who had contributed a lot and fought for the independence of India; along with a marking of the 75 anniversary of the Quit India movement, to revive the spirit of patriotism among citizens.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu gave the details of what promises to be a mega show involving the government and citizens in more than 150 locations.

Narendra Modi will also participate in these programmes apart from his customary address to the nation.

Around 150 places connected to the freedom movement have been identified and 75 Union Ministers will travel there during this period. “Each Minister will travel to at least two of these places in different States, added Naidu.

Women Ministers had been asked to travel to the border areas and tie rakhi to jawans to include them in the celebrations and to highlight their role in protecting the borders.

Freedom fighters and jawans who received gallantry awards would be praised. Promotion of khadi and sports meets is some of the events being worked out.

Essay competitions in schools on the general theme of the struggle for Independence will be organized by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry.

Patriotic films and songs would be broadcast on Doordarshan and All India Radio. Mr. Naidu made a similar appeal to private television channels.

Mr. Naidu said, it is not a party programme. We appeal all other political parties to take part in the way they would like to and make it a success. “This is to make the new generation remember the contribution of freedom fighters, especially those who have remained unknown in the past,” he added.
