Sir,
Has not the Kanpur train tragedy once again put the spotlight on railway’s utter neglect in maintaining and upgrading its infrastructure, particularly aging tracks?
At least 120 lives have been snuffed out in the deadliest train accident in six years as the Indore-Patna express packed with more than 2,000 people and going 100 kmph, flew off the track at 3:10 a.m, leading to derailment of 14 coaches.
Over 50% of train accidents in the last three years have been caused due to derailment and around 29% of these incidents have been because of track defects, largely rail and weld failures.
A journalist who was a regular on the train told that he had already alerted some railway officials in the S2 coach but the authorities brushed aside his concern. Wow! Take a bow on their work.
Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu is an Indian Politician and the current Railway minister of India, under the Narendra Modi government. He has ordered a probe into the accident and mourned the dealths. Moreover, he is also now found taking stock of the situation, monitoring rescue and relief operations.
In spite of repenting now, he should have had tightened screws and checked the work of the railway authorities earlier so that a worst rail accident like Sunday wouldn’t have had happened.
What’s the use of repenting now when the bird has already eaten the harvest?”
